Position Information Department Chair of Social Science (Faculty) – Perimeter College, Georgia State University Overview Perimeter College invites applications for the next chair of the Department of Social Sciences. The chair is the chief administrative and academic officer of the department, responsible for overseeing academic pathways and programs, faculty and staff hiring and evaluation, budgeting, resource management, and course scheduling. The chair represents the department in official communications and prepares an annual report on teaching, scholarly and creative activities, and service work of the department. The chair reports to the Dean of the college or a designated representative. Department/College The Social Sciences Department at Perimeter College is a dynamic, multidisciplinary community with 64 full-time faculty. The department offers courses across History, Political Science, African-American Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice, Education, Social Work, Gerontology, Anthropology, Homeland Security & Emergency Management, and Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies. It prepares students for further study and careers in law, business, education, journalism, public service, and more. Position Description The chair leads the department’s academic and administrative efforts, ensuring offerings meet student demand and align with college/university strategic plans. Responsibilities include hiring and evaluating faculty and staff, budgeting, scheduling, and coordinating with other units. The chair coordinates departmental activities with college/university units and collaborates with administrators on college initiatives. The position requires approval from the Dean and the Provost. The chair is evaluated by the department faculty at least every three years and annually by the immediate supervisor. Represent the department in communications with the dean, provost, president, and other officers; and in communications with faculty and students. Lead the annual report detailing teaching, scholarly and creative activities, and service. Collaborate with program directors and associate chairs to drive innovation in teaching and program development. Ensure quality instruction; supervise teaching quality; consult with faculty on the scope and quality of their work; monitor student progress. Ensure robust assessment practices at the course and pathway level to support accreditation and teaching excellence. Develop, manage, and staff the department schedule of classes to meet enrollment trends and institutional goals. Assign courses, maintain equitable distribution of courses, and prepare catalog information for the dean’s office. Recruit new faculty, oversee appointments, re-appointments, promotions, and, per tenure policy, dismissals; ensure compliance with university policies. Support scholarly and creative activity; lead departmental policy development and execution in line with university practices. Supervise all department faculty and staff (including associate/assistant chairs, if applicable). Plan and manage the department budget and monitor financial activity as required. Responsibilities (Additional) Teach one three-credit hour course during the academic year (total of three credit hours). Participate in professional development activities (leadership development, training on software, reporting systems, USG initiatives, and SOPs). Perform related duties as assigned or evolving. Required Experience Academic and teaching record suitable for tenure and rank at appointment (associate professor or professor) in the department of appointment. 1 year of academic leadership experience in a higher education setting. Internal candidates: must hold tenure and rank of Associate Professor or Professor by January 1, 2026. Required Education Terminal degree in a departmentally related teaching field at the time of appointment. Preferred Qualifications/Experience Demonstrated record of academic leadership and administrative experience (chair, associate chair, program director, or center director). Experience with teaching innovation, program development, and enrollment management. Excellent communication and collaboration across departments, campuses, modalities, and support units. Familiarity with accreditation requirements relevant to the department. Experience with evaluation, promotion, and tenure processes in higher education. Experience in a 2-year, access college environment. Experience with assessment and leading assessment initiatives. Familiarity with budgeting and funds management to support department, students, and faculty success.
