City of Freeport Now Hiring Firefighters

Minimum Application Requirements:

There are minimum standards that must be met in order to qualify for appointment as a member of the City of Freeport Fire Department.

These standards are established by Illinois State Statute, the Board of Fire & Police Commission and City of Freeport Ordinances.

• Candidates must be between 21 to under 35 years of age, unless otherwise exempt by state statute.

• U.S. Citizenship


• Possess a valid drivers license and able to drive city vehicles and comply with the Illinois Secretary of State requirements at the time of appointment to the department.


• High School Diploma or GED Certificate

Minimum Requirements for Hire:

• Proof of a valid International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) - International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) required—at time of oral interview. Licensed CPAT testing agencies are as follows:

Central Illinois Fire Chiefs—Decatur, IL

NIPSTA—Glenview, IL

SUFD—Darien, IL

Huntley Fire Protection District—huntleyfpd.org/cpat-testing

Naperville F.D.—

What to Expect:

Once a candidate is notified of an opening, and has successfully completed all tests and examinations they can expect the following:

Departmental Orientation—Each new member is provided the opportunity to meet members of the department and is given the chance to experience departmental operations on an up-close level.

A new recruit will be provided department specific training and may be required to attend a Firefighter Basic Training academy, if Basic Firefighter Certification is already held this may be waived.

A new recruit will also need to successfully complete an orientation checklist and field training before they are permitted to fully operate as a firefighter during emergency operations. A firefighter will be required to become a EMT-B and a Paramedic within four years.

Numerous opportunities exist to advance up the ranks as a member of the department. Potential advancements include: EMT-Paramedic, Fire Department Mechanic, Lieutenant, District Chief and Deputy Chief.

A firefighter for the City of Freeport Fire Department works a 24 hours on duty/48 hours off duty shift schedule. This schedule averages 53 hours worked per week and 2,756 hours on an annual basis.
