Silicon Valley International School is looking for a dependable On-Call School Bus Driver to join our team. The selected candidate will be responsible for transporting students safely to and from school, as well as between different campuses and to extracurricular events when required. This involves following a specific route and ensuring the safety of all passengers.

This position is on an on-call basis, meaning you will be contacted to work as needed rather than following a fixed schedule. Flexibility and readiness to respond at short notice are essential for this role. 

As a School Bus Driver, your responsibilities will include conducting pre-trip inspections to ensure the bus is in good condition, adhering to safety and traffic regulations during the journey, and maintaining order and discipline among students on board. Effective communication with students, parents, and school staff is expected, along with providing excellent customer service and addressing any concerns or issues that may arise. The School Bus Driver plays a critical role in providing safe and reliable transportation for students, ultimately contributing to their overall school experience.

The successful candidate will have at least two years of experience as a school bus driver. This role requires drivers to follow a split shift schedule from Monday to Friday, which may change based on operational requirements. Please be aware that during mandatory training periods, days off may be adjusted to accommodate scheduled training courses, which can occur on weekends or evenings.

This position is classified as seasonal and on-call, and is therefore considered non-exempt. Compensation will be provided on an hourly basis. We are pleased to offer a competitive salary structure that reflects the individual's education, expertise, and full accreditation. The hourly compensation rate is derived from a full-time equivalent annual salary range of $67,568 (Step 1) to $81,635 (Step 20).

Primary Responsibilities

 
  • Under supervision, operate a school bus on designated routes to transport school children and perform related work as required.
  • Specific Duties Include:
  • Operate a school shuttle bus daily over designated routes in accordance with time schedules
  • Picked up and discharged school children and/or school employees safely according to transportation rules
  • Transport students and/or teachers on field trips to various locations, following the scheduled route and using best judgment to make necessary detours to achieve departure and arrival times as scheduled.
  • Pre/post-trip inspections are required and assist in maintaining the bus in safe operating condition 
  • Maintain clean exteriors and interiors of the bus(es). Keep a record of mileage, fuel, and oil, and prepare reports of driving hazards and incidents
  • Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code are applicable to the operation of vehicles transporting school children. First aid practices

  • Maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work.

Qualifications, Licenses, and Certificates

  • One year of experience as a school bus driver is required.
  • Must have and maintain a Valid California Commercial Driver's License, Class A or B, with Passenger Endorsement.
  • Current California Special Driver Certificate, valid for driving school buses.
  • The current DMV-approved medical certificate (renewed every 2 years)
  • First Aid Training for School Bus Drivers- EMSA Approved
  • You are required to submit to drug and alcohol testing, as well as a background check using LiveScan fingerprinting.
 

Driver Compensation 

  • Classification: hourly and non-exempt
  • The hourly compensation rate is determined based on a full-time equivalent annual salary range of $67,568 (step 1) to $81,635 (step 20). [$32.48 to $39.25]
 

Driver Work Schedule

  • Work schedules are considered split shifts based on a minimum of 6.5 hours of driving time per day. Coverage may include driving for occasional field trips or covering the absence of one of the other Bus Drivers. 
  • Scheduled work is during the school year and the K-2 Summer Camp, which runs from mid-June to early July. 
  • Responsibilities include bus maintenance, driving for mini-camp field trips, safety training, and other scheduled tasks.
