Under general supervision, provides continuous emotional and physical support for a woman and her immediate family during the early postpartum period. Education required is HS or GED. Licensure includes Heart Saver (CPR Certification) and a current Maryland Driver’s License and Insurance. Experience required is prior experience acting as the primary caregiver for children or adults. Skills needed include knowledge of breastfeeding practices, organization skills, ability to perform light housekeeping, effective communication with expectant couples and healthcare providers in stressful situations, ability to foster positive relationships with potential infant siblings, multitasking, ability to follow basic cooking instructions and prepare nutritious family meals, knowledge of religious and cultural cooking restrictions, comfort with transportation in clients' vehicles, and knowledge of properly installed infant car seats. Principal duties include assisting the postpartum mother and family with at-home postpartum care, home organization, infant care and feeding support including breastfeeding and/or bottle feeding, maintaining continuous presence during contracted hours including daytime and/or overnight support, providing emotional support, facilitating communication between the woman, partner, and healthcare providers, promoting family-infant attachment, providing newborn and sibling care, offering feeding support and guidance, performing light housekeeping, home organization, meal preparation/planning, shopping duties, providing information via printed materials and lending library, and maintaining accurate client hourly logs for postpartum services.
