At our Akron, OH location we are searching for a:

Environmental Health and Safety Specialist

The Onsite Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining safety, health, and environmental programs to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and company standards. This role supports a Tier 1 automotive manufacturing facility, working closely with leadership, engineering, and production teams to promote a proactive safety culture and ensure a safe and compliant work environment.

Key Responsibilities

Regulatory Compliance & Reporting

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, state, and local environmental and safety regulations.
  • Maintain required permits, records, and documentation for regulatory audits and inspections.
  • Prepare and submit environmental, health, and safety reports in accordance with deadlines.

Safety Program Management

  • Conduct hazard assessments, job safety analyses (JSA), and risk evaluations for all plant processes.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain site-specific safety policies, procedures, and training programs.
  • Lead safety committee meetings and coordinate employee safety engagement activities.

Incident Prevention & Investigation

  • Perform regular plant safety audits, inspections, and walkthroughs to identify hazards and unsafe behaviors.
  • Investigate workplace incidents, injuries, and near misses; determine root causes; and implement corrective actions.
  • Track safety metrics, analyze trends, and recommend continuous improvement initiatives.

Environmental Management

  • Monitor air, water, and waste management processes to ensure environmental compliance.
  • Oversee hazardous waste disposal, spill response, and chemical inventory control.
  • Support sustainability and waste reduction initiatives.

Training & Communication

  • Deliver EHS orientation and training to employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Communicate safety expectations and updates to all levels of the organization.
  • Provide coaching and guidance to supervisors and employees on safe work practices.

Emergency Preparedness

  • Maintain and test emergency response plans, including fire, medical, spill, and severe weather.
  • Coordinate drills and ensure readiness of safety equipment and emergency supplies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or related field (preferred).
  • 3+ years of EHS experience in manufacturing; Tier 1 automotive experience strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and other applicable safety/environmental regulations.
  • Experience with safety management systems (SMS) and environmental management systems (EMS) such as ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and EHS management software.
  • CSP, ASP, CHMM, or similar certification is a plus.

Work Environment

  • Primarily onsite within a manufacturing facility environment.
  • Exposure to noise, machinery, chemicals, and varying temperatures.
  • Requires wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed.
